*Bulldogs do not tolerate the heat well and, in fact, are in danger of choking/suffocating to death in heat or by exhaustion on a hot day as their windpipe (which is narrow to begin with) can become swollen (due to edema) and thus prevent air exchange to and from the lungs. Bulldogs’ life span is ordinarily shorter than many other breeds – perhaps between 8 and 10 years, and only rarely much longer. They can tend to develop veterinary problems owing to their unusual conformation, whether this be skin/coat problems because of their redundant coat and folds, breathing difficulties, crooked (wry) jaws, infected ear canals, infected cysts between the toes, etc., so be prepared to take on some vet and medicine bills, at least from time to time.

My basic point is that they have a lot of medical issues. There were more I didn’t list. The soft palette surgery reduced her breathing problems and I highly recommend it. She’s 8 now and that’s the twighlight years for a bully. They don’t live long. 8–10 years. But I fully believe that ease in breathing has added to her lifespan. She looks great. Happy and still plays. Still crazy as hell and not right in the head, but that’s a Bulldog and part of the charm. They are not like other dogs at all. We also have 3 French Bulldogs. I didn’t want a Frenchie. I don’t like small dogs. Never have. I was wrong. They are the greatest dogs I’ve ever had. All of them. Ok, one may be special needs and he has a helmet. But he’s adorable and sweet. I was smitten with my English. So much that I got her tattooed on my arm in New Zealand. I love her. But god these Frenchies are so awesome. They are not little dogs. They are big dogs in tiny packages.
